Alex Kelly

Professional: Alex Kelly joined the firm in 2019 as an Audit Partner working in MHA Moore and Smalley’s Manchester Office.

Graduating from Lancaster University in 2001 with a degree in Finance before qualifying as an ACA in 2005. Now an FCA, he has developed and honed his skill set over several years with top ten audit firms. Alex now sets his sights on developing the new Manchester office for MHA Moore & Smalley.

Alex is also a specialist in share and business valuation and has experience in the valuation of intellectual property. He uses this expertise both directly in specific valuation engagements but also indirectly in coaching his clients, enabling them to better understand the drivers of value, building more sustainable and ultimately more valuable businesses. Alex is a member of the Academy of Experts in recognition of this skill set.

Alex’s experience is predominantly working with large owner managed businesses through to PE backed corporate entities across a number of sectors and international territories.

Personal: Living in Culcheth, Cheshire, Alex is a keen cyclist who regularly cycles round the winding country roads of Cheshire and beyond. Alex has cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End and from Coast to Coast. An avid Manchester United fan, he has been regularly attending matches since 1991 including European Cup Finals wins in Barcelona in 1999 and Moscow in 2008. Alex enjoys spending time with his family including his wonderful daughter Rose.   

Optician firm focuses on succession and growth

Optician chain David H Myers has completed two significant deals as part of a succession planning strategy that has introduced new blood to the management team, while developing the business.

The chain, which operates branches in Southport, Penwortham, Leeds, Churchtown, and Lytham, sold a substantial minority stake in its Churchtown branch to Rob Lowther, who already owned a major shareholding in the Penwortham practice.

The deal will see Rob taking on management responsibilities for operations in Churchtown, in addition to his ongoing role in Penwortham.

In a second transaction, incoming director Paul Jones has acquired a minority stake in the Lytham practice from each of the owners, David Myers and Ian Brooker.

The Lytham deal will enable Paul to work with Ian to drive the ongoing expansion of the Lytham business.

David, who founded the business in 1979, said: “These two transactions are pivotal to our succession planning and growth strategy. The first deal allows Rob to take on a remit for managing our Churchtown practice as well as his role at Penwortham, while the second means Paul will step up at Lytham to assist Ian in a management role that will enable the further development of the branch.

“Just as importantly, the two deals will generate resources to fuel our ongoing expansion programme and we are currently in discussions with owner-managers of optician practices regarding potential acquisitions.”

David H Myers has received corporate finance, transaction services, tax and succession planning advice from the Preston team at accounts MHA Moore and Smalley.

Michelle Taylor

Professional: Michelle joined MHA Moore and Smalley in 2003 having qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2001 and going on to qualify as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2005. Michelle provides specialist taxation advice to a wide range of individuals and owner managed businesses, small and large, covering company reorganisations, sales and acquisitions, EMI schemes and general taxes.

Personal: In her spare time, Michelle enjoys spending time with her family and friends and watching rugby league.

Elizabeth Hall

Professional: Liz joined the firm more than 16 years ago from Latham Crossley & Davis, where she worked as a financial consultant.  Liz is the Director of Financial Planning, and specialises in advising clients in the healthcare profession.

Personal: Liz is happily married, and has two step children.  She enjoys her weekends doing voluntary work, and loves travelling and cooking.

David Hackett

Professional: David joined MHA Moore and Smalley in 2006 after graduating from the University of Lancaster with a degree in Mathematics, and went on to qualify as a Chartered Accountant in 2009 and a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2011.

David provides specialist taxation advice to a wide range of owner managed businesses, small and large, covering income, capital and business taxes. David also provides advice to our academy schools clients on areas such as VAT and corporation tax.

Personal: In his spare time, David enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children and watching sport, mainly football.

Stephen Gregson

Professional: Stephen joined our team from KPMG Corporate Finance in Manchester in 2002. To date he has advised businesses on mergers and acquisitions, fundraising and strategic planning across a wide range of sectors including waste management, haulage, construction, engineering and wealth management financial services.

At Moore and Smalley Corporate Finance he has continued to focus upon advising owner managed businesses on strategic direction, mergers and acquisitions, and fundraising.

Personal: Stephen is happily married and has two young children He enjoys travelling both in Britain and abroad.

Judith Dugdale

Professional: Judith joined Moore and Smalley in 2000 after completing an Accounting degree at Hull University. Judith embarked on the Moore and Smalley Graduate Trainee programme and qualified in 2003. Judith was recognised for her efforts by being voted ‘young trainee accountant of the year’ in 2006 by the North West Society of Chartered Accountants and was awarded the ‘Rising Start’ Award in 2012. She now specialises in looking after Leisure and Tourism clients as well as small and medium businesses from the Preston office.

Personal: Judith resides in a small village on the outskirts of Clitheroe and spends her weekends with her young son as well as catching up with her friends and family. In addition to this Judith plays hockey for the Clitheroe Ladies and has held the position of treasurer for many years. She is also a keen Bolton Wanderers fan and follows most sports from the comfort of her sofa!

Victoria Dadswell

Professional: Victoria joined MHA Moore & Smalley in May 2013. She qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2006 completing her training with Lonsdale & Partners. Victoria provides specialist tax advice to individuals and owner managed businesses predominantly in the North Lancashire and South Cumbria area. Victoria has wide range of experience including research & development claims, EMI schemes, company reorganisations and inheritance tax planning. She has advised a number of property developers and land owners on all tax aspects of property development. Victoria is also leading the Making Tax Digital initiative for MHA Moore and Smalley.

Personal: Outside of work Victoria enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children. She also regularly takes part in long distance walks.

Deborah Wood

Professional: Debbie joined the firm in January 1999 as resident partner in the Blackpool office to manage client services on the Fylde.

She is the current Chairman of the Moore and Smalley partnership and leads the firm’s specialist healthcare services department.

Debbie is Vice Chairman of The Association of Independent Specialist Medical Accountants (AISMA) and a former President of the North West Society of Chartered Accountants.

Debbie has specialised in looking after Healthcare Professional clients for over twenty years and is invited to speak at seminars across the country to doctors, their practice managers and fellow accountants on a wide variety of financial management topics affecting the sector. She contributes articles and comments to the Medical Press on a regular basis.

In June 2008 Debbie received the HealthInvestor Accountant of the Year Award on behalf of the Moore and Smalley Medical Team and in 2013 is representing the firm as a finalist in the category of Financial Advisors of the Year at the General Practice Awards.

Personal: Debbie is married to Richard who she met through her involvement in the Rotaract movement. They have a daughter, Philippa, a son, Nathan and a golden retriever puppy, Libby.

Christine Wilson

Professional: Christine has been with Moore and Smalley since 1994. In addition to a portfolio of clients, Christine is also the partner responsible for audit compliance and service delivery to our larger clients.

Christine’s clients are primarily larger limited companies and charitable organisations. She has also been involved in risk assessment projects, and assisted clients in a variety of business sectors in drawing up internal audit procedures to minimise risk.

Personal: Christine is married and has two sons; she is very active within the community as both a governor for a local primary school and also as the treasurer for her local scout group. She enjoys outdoor activities including walking and cycling. Family holidays are spent in France.
