Stewart prepares for coast-to-coast ride for Derian House
Moore and Smalley corporate services director, Stewart Case, and six of his friends will be cycling over 200km later this month when they take part in the Coast 2 Coast cycle ride.
The challenge, to raise money for Derian House Children’s Hospice, will see Stewart cycling a gruelling route from Whitehaven on the Cumbria coast to Sunderland on the Northumberland coast – a distance of 219km.
The challenge takes place on May 17, 2012 and in the run up to this date, Stewart will be writing a weekly blog updating us on his progress:

“Another week of intense training completed! Every night this week I’ve thought about getting the bike out of the shed. I’m confident that it will see the light of day next week. Seriously though I’ve completed close to 120 km’s this week but I’m still nervously looking at the fact that there are less than 3 weeks to go before we depart on the ride across the country. Hopefully this week’s weather isn’t a taste of what we can expect when we actually start. Monsoon rain is not the ideal cycling conditions.”

“The realisation is now hitting home that there is less than two weeks to go until Le Grand Depart! Our eclectic group of riders are clearly in various states of panic. I find myself experiencing a throwback to my school exam days where I got by with lots of late cramming. In the same token I’m getting on my bike to spend every possible moment riding in the hope that I don’t make a fool of myself when we set off!
I think that I will try to get out in the hills this weekend to try and get the legs (and lungs) used to a bit of climbing. As much as I love cycling there is no feeling that readily expresses the intense pain of riding a bike up a hill!”

“Well its now less than a week to go! If were not ready now I guess well never be ready!
Been out in the hills aclimatising to lung busting climbs ahead. Can’t wait for day three of the ride because its all down hill!
I’ve been compiling a list of essential supplies to take but reliably informed that the only thing I must have is chamois cream!”

“I’m updating my blog after our first day of the coast 2 coast bike ride. We covered 50 miles today from Whitehaven to Penrith in approximately 5 hours. There were several climbs along the way but we all made it the end.
No doubt tomorrow will necessitate the need for copious amounts of painkillers to get us mobile. By all accounts the climbs get harder tomorrow!”
“Well it’s all over! After 150 miles, numerous mountain stretches, easterly winds, unremitting rain and two punctures we made it to Tynemouth! Whilst we all found it to be a real challenge and punishing we all found it to be an immensely stimulating and enjoyable experience. No sooner had we finished and we were talking about next year’s challenge!
The good news is thanks to many generous sponsors we will hopefully raise approximately £5,000 for Derian House which I know they will put to good use. Thanks to everyone who supported us with special mention to our driver without whose help we could not of succeeded in this challenge!”
