Devilish Delights in Lancaster
An innovative new fundraising initiative was introduced to the Lancaster business community at The Holiday Inn, Caton Road, as Moore & Smalley and Barclays Bank competed in the heat of the kitchen to raise funds for The Smile Foundation and Lancaster’s Unique Kidz & Co.
The event created and delivered by The Smile Foundation has helped to raise over £200,000 in Hull & East Yorkshire and is now being rolled out across the country with the backing of The Holiday Inn Group, with an aim to raise funds for local charities to each venue.
Guests were treated to a welcome drink and delicious 3 course meal, all prepared cooked and delivered by the two competing teams. Both Moore & Smalley and Barclays Bank had to provide 8 team members to deliver the evening and invite 40 guests each to dine.
Andrew Barber Charity Manager at The Smile Foundation said. “The concept brings together team building, corporate entertainment and charitable giving on in one day. Charities now have to look at fundraising differently and Devils Kitchen is a perfect example of this. Both the teams and guests don’t pay anything to be part of the event, there are no raffles, tombola’s or auctions all we ask is for each team to donate their staffs time and provide some drinks for their tables, and guests are asked for one donation at the end of the night”
On the evening from 7.30pm, Guests were entertained with the introduction of a live link to the kitchen, bringing the action to the tables with a spotlight on all team members not just the waiters and waitresses. Throughout the evening guests also interact by taking part in a taste test challenge and scoring their team’s food, drink and service.
Both teams gain a true taste for what it is like to work within the hospitality industry from laying the tables and polishing the cutlery, to preparing the food from scratch. Nicola Crawley General Manager from the Holiday Inn said. “We were delighted to introduce the first of hopefully many Devils Kitchens here in Lancaster. It was a real eye opener for the two teams to see what my staff do day in day out but also it was great for us to spend quality time with two enthusiastic teams raising a great sum for charity. Devils Kitchen is a real win, win for all involved”
Taking away the trophy as the first winners of Devils Kitchen Lancaster was team Barclays, but the real winners on the evening were the charities thanks to the generosity of the guests and Barclays Bank Match funding scheme a total of £6,995 was raised. Due to the support of the Holiday Inn and the cost affective delivery of The Smile Foundation, this figure will make a huge impact on people’s lives.
